EJU Courses

The EJU program is an examination preparation course designed for international students wishing to enter a Japanese university (undergraduate), etc.

What is the EJU program?
The EJU program is an examination preparation course designed for international students wishing to enter a Japanese university (undergraduate), etc. The EJU is called “Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students”.
EJU, or “Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students”, is an examination for international students that evaluates their Japanese language skills and basic academic abilities. This exam is crucial for international students wishing to study at Japanese universities, as 80% of Japanese universities require EJU scores.The EJU exam covers Japanese language (including listening, reading, and composition), liberal arts (politics, economics, modern society, geography, and modern history), science (physics, chemistry, and biology, choose two out of three), and liberal arts/science math.
The EJU curriculum is designed to help students prepare for this exam in a comprehensive manner by improving their Japanese language skills and knowledge of various subjects through systematic study and practice to meet the challenges of the EJU exam. These courses usually include both online and offline teaching methods to allow students from different geographical locations to participate. The course content starts from the basics of each subject, teaching the knowledge system, emphasizing both explanation and practice, and using small class sizes to ensure that each student receives adequate instruction and feedback. In addition, the course provides detailed study abroad planning to help students complete each stage on time and prepare for admission to the university of their choice.

What are the scores for each subject of the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU)?
The EJU consists of three subjects: Japanese + Mathematics + General Studies (Liberal Arts General Studies / Science General Studies).
Japanese (writing, listening, reading, listening and reading) 400 points + 50 points (writing);
Mathematics 200 points;
General (200 points)
General Arts (Politics, Economics, Society, Geography, History) or General Science (choose two out of three: Physics, Chemistry, Biology);
Total of the above: 850 points.
If you want to rush to the top universities such as the University of Tokyo and Kyoto University, the total EJU score should basically be above 730 now; if you want to take the excellent universities such as Tohoku University, Osaka University, Nagoya University, Kyushu University, Hitotsubashi University, etc., the total EJU score is generally above 680; if you want to take the local national universities such as Chiba University, Yokohama National University, Saitama University, Ibaraki University, etc., the total EJU score is usually above 680. If you want to enter a local national university, such as Chiba University, Yokohama National University, Saitama University, Ibaraki University, etc., the total score of EJU is usually over 570 points.

1.The first category of universities (top 9 universities)
The old seven imperial universities (Tohoku University, Kyoto University, Osaka, Tohoku, Nagoya, Hokkaido, and Kyushu), Tokyo Institute of Technology, Hitotsubashi University, and so on.
Application period: Most of them are concentrated in the end of November and the beginning of January, and there is only one application period.
Requirements: Each university has different requirements for the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU), and Hitotsubashi University's requirements are not too high compared to other universities of the same level (minimum TOEFL score of 48). The total score of the Rikkyo Examination (not counting the Japanese language test) is 680 points↑. TOEFL 70+ is recommended for arts and sciences, and TOEFL 80+ is recommended for science and engineering. The exception is the Faculty of Medicine (90% of the total score on the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU), 90+ TOEFL can be challenged).

2.The second type of university
National public universities: Tsukuba, Kobe, Hiroshima, Chiba, Yokohama, Tohoku, Ochanomizu, Kanazawa, Okayama, Shudai, etc.
When to apply: Chiba in early November, the rest are concentrated in December and early January. Most of them have only one phase, and a few have two phases.
Private Universities: Waseda, Keio, Sophia
Application time: Waseda in July, Keio and Sophia in late October-early November.
Requirements: Almost 80% or higher on the RYU exam + TOEFL. Some universities can only submit TOEFL (Tohoku University does not require English). You have to check the specifics of the program you are applying to. It is recommended that students with a total score of about 650 apply.

3.Category 3 Universities (within the top 50, except for schools in the first and second categories)
Application period: Meiji is in September, other universities are in December-January.
Requirements: The Rikkyo Examination requires 280 points ↑ in Japanese (not counting the notes) and 280 points ↑ in General Studies + Math, so it is recommended that students with a total score of about 600 points take the exam. The English requirement depends on the program of study.

4. Fourth category universities (universities ranked 51-100)
When to apply: Yokohama City University in September, and most of the rest of the national and public universities are centered around the end of December-January. The first phase of private universities is in September-October, and the second phase is around January.
Requirements: For Economics and Business Studies, it is recommended to take a Japanese test (without memorization) of about 300. For general liberal arts, it is recommended to take Japanese (without memorization) with a score of 250+. Try to score 60% or more in math and literature. For science and engineering, you can refer to Ibaraki University, which requires a total score of 550 or more for Japanese (including notation), math, and science. Of course, it is possible for a lower ranked university to have a lower score than this, but it should not be lower than the average score.

5.The fifth category of universities (universities outside the top 100)
National public: Joetsu University of Education, Gunma Prefectural Women's University, Shizuoka Prefectural University, Kanagawa Prefectural University of Welfare and Health, etc.
Private: Toyo University, Reiser University, Teikyo University, Tokai University, Asia University, Musashino University, Kogakuin University, Tokyo University of Technology.
Application period: Most of these universities have two phases, one in September/October and the other in January.
Requirements: Some universities do not require the results of the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU), but have an internal examination (mostly set in the first semester). Most of the universities do not have clear regulations on the test scores, and most of the universities with more than 100 students require scores above the average, while some of the universities with N2 in liberal arts majors before or after 200 students do not need to submit the test scores.

6.The sixth category of universities (after 200)
Representative universities: Hideaki University, Kirin Yokohama University, Seitoku University, Sugino Women's University, Tsurumi University, Keiai University, Sukutoku University
Time of application: It is not recommended to apply for the first semester, but you can apply for the second or third semester as a guaranteed institution, mostly around February.
Requirements: Basically, only N2 or Japanese (200+) is required, so it's close to a university that you can go to as long as you pay for it.

7.The seventh category (vocational school)
When to apply: There are 3-4 sessions for good vocational schools, and 6 sessions for general vocational schools. The latest is in March.
Requirements: Choose one of the three: a score on the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU), N2, or take the internal examination. If you pay money, you can basically go to the school (except for Japanese beginners).
The above is organized with the contents on the internet for reference. It does not mean that if you get the above score in the EJU exam, you can go on to higher education. If you have a high score in the EJU exam, the pressure of the internal exam and interview will be relatively small. Because the requirements of each institution or major are different, some may require that the score of EJU Japanese should not be lower than 220 points, while economics, business administration, international political economy and such majors are likely to need English scores, so when preparing for the examination, as far as possible, first to determine the direction of their own higher education, and then try to improve their overall strength, and plan to deal with the on-campus examination and interview to prepare for the examination.
